On a Winter Morning

On a clear blue, wintry morning, I gazed upon the neighborhood In a quiet contemplation Of the bright, white, frosty rooftops Along December's sunlit streets. I marveled at the joy it brought To see each glimmering sparkle Of light reflect upon my eye, On this clear blue, wintry morning. As the sun's warmth touched each shingle, A transformation then began, And I stared in dreamlike wonder, Amid December's sunlit streets. The frost seemed to embrace the beams Of light the sun cast down on the… Continue

Spirit Consultations (part II)

The Path Now as the bright day star decreased its burn, And the wheel of time revolved toward night, My relentless musings had more to learn. With wary words mixed into the twilight, I spoke carefully to the evening air, And though it was transparent to my sight, My longing eyes were seeking everywhere. Eagerly scanning the vanishing sky; Asking aloud "Spirit, are you still there?" "Be still" returned the voice in calm reply, "You have only to look for me deep inside. Your chamber of… Continue

Poet, Pen, and Page

The pen brings life unto the empty page, Yet it does not write of its own accord. We are nothing but a clay writing tool Seeking to write our lives upon the blank Pages of an undecided future. Father, guide this pen to fill these pages With words that are acceptable to you. Continue

To My Complaining Heart

Hush now, my complaining heart, be silent! Desist this pounding, pounding in my ears! Must your ill tempered beat be so violent To bang its war drums announcing my fears? Retreive your molten anger from my face. It burns with the hatred which I abhor, And leads down the path to my disgrace. A path I've traveled many times before. Beat! Beat in time with God's sweet charity! Pulsate with the desires of His will, And then my heart, we'll find a rarity, That our troubles will become silent, still,… Continue

The Pilgrim's Quest

In the clear of a summer night, When stars dance with delight Around the moons radiant beams, I find myself lost in dreams. A stranger strolls a mountain trail Looking withered, weak, and pale. He walks the edge of a precipice; Peering into its dark abyss. The stars adrift in moonlit skies, Patiently watch with twinkling eyes. Waiting in fields of ebony, For him to choose his destiny. With Heaven above and the abyss below, The pilgrim ponders which way to go. Driven by a restlessness, Wander… Continue

Looking Back

The two sat on the porch, talking 'bout the past, And how one wished those simple times simply would have last. But now they sit in silence under summer's burning rays, Sifting through their memories of moments long since passed. 'Funny,' the one said to the other with a misty sort of gaze, 'How lookin' at what used to be, in those golden days, Only makes me notice more the way they aint the same.' 'Yep,' said the second one, 'and I give God all the praise For giving me a simple path back to wh… Continue

Fireflies and Starry Skies

Slowly I strolled along the unpaved lane That wound its way through the grass covered field. As the sun sailed upon the pale blue main, And twilights shadows were softly revealed, The fireflies flashed in the fading light, Lifting themselves in the suns mellow yield. Pausing to marvel that magical sight, My thoughts began wandering through my mind. It was then, in the coming of the night, The frailty of faith was quickly defined. The fireflies flickered before my eyes; A bright flash with dar… Continue

Mountains

Once I made a mountain out of all that I did treasure, And heaped upon it, stone by stone, things of earthly pleasure. Standing proud upon its peak; looking down where I began, I shouted out to those below, ' behold how great I am! ' Then, in the breath of silence that is felt before the dawn, That mighty mountain I had made, crumbled, and was gone. So I made another mountain with my fear and rage. Hoarding all my treasures, I placed them in a cage. Heaping on them jagged rocks of anger and dis… Continue

Choices

Along the many roads we'll travel; Through the journeys we all undertake; At daylight's end, when thoughts unravel, There will be decisions to make. Which road will you choose tomorrow, To take you to your destination? Which one will be free of sorrow? Which one shall lead you from temptation? Have faith in God, and your choice will be clear. Walk upright through your travels today; Then you will see the right path appear, And the Lord will lead you down this long highway. Continue

The Sleeping Child

Silently she sleeps. Softly breathing. Sweetly dreaming. I wonder what goes on in there; Beneath the layers of her hair. To her, the world is still so new; What does she see in her slumbering view? What occupies her resting eyes Beneath the flaxen layers of her hair? Does she sense her father's smile, Or see her mother's seemly style? Maybe, in that place of restful grace, She welcomes the Lord's embrace. How wonderful that dream would be; To see Him smiling down at me. Softly; Sweetly; Silen… Continue

Sing, Oh Sweet Spirit

Sing to me, my spirit, in a sweet and gentle way That will reach me, and teach me, each time that I pray. Sing hope to this heart that is heavy to bear. Give it rest in this breast that is blessed by your care. Sing soft, oh dear spirit, in your heavenly tongue, Words, I once heard, only angels have sung. Oh sing me a song of our Saviors great love; Music which comes from that mansion above. Sing, oh sweet spirit, in your own gentle way. Reach me, and teach me, each hour of the day. Continue

Tell Me All About It

Come to Me my troubled child, tell Me all about it. What worries your weary heart, burdons your bright spirit? Why cast your anger at a world that cannot seem to hear it? Come to Me in your quiet place, you will find Me there. Speak to Me from your saddened soul, you know that I do care. Let Me lighten your languishing thoughts, oh child do not despair! Bring to Me your broken heart, I will give you peace. Come to Me my woeful one, let me grant you some release. Place your pain within My palm… Continue

From the Valley Floor

I went walking with my Father On a plain and rainy day, As the wind whipped at my face, And I slipped along the way. Blinking through the biting drops Of the stinging, stormy spray, I asked where we were traveling; "Just wait" was all He'd say. We journeyed from the valley floor Up a steep and rain slick slope; Faithfully I followed Father, Unsure how He could cope. Striving for firm footing, And at times having to grope, I asked if I could take a rest; He simply answered "Nope." When we fin… Continue

His Thirst

Here I stand at the place called Golgatha, With the one to be resurrected first, Cruelly bound and nailed to the martyr's cross; In His agony, He softly says "I thirst." "I thirst," spoke He who calmed the wind and sea, And the heart within me suddenly burst. This man who had once fed the multitude, Unmistakenly called aloud "I thirst!" Yet He did not thirst for the sour wine The careless soldiers hastily gave, But to meet and greet every single soul His unselfish sacrifice will save! Now it… Continue

The Lake Trail

The wind walks softly on the water, Invisible feet in unseen flight, Leaving tiny footprints on the surface; Diminutive glimpses of glittering light. Painted on this aquatic canvas Are the trees and leaves of the fallow shore, Whose water color compositions Invite my eyes to roam and explore The mighty pine and golden beech, The flowering crocus and camellia. Magnolia blossoms, silky white, And the wild growing azalea. The Master's hands have worked His wonder All around this limited lake. I… Continue

Storms and Anchors

The storm came quick that day. The ocean swelled With waves as high as seven feet. The sky Had turned a greenish hue, as clouds compelled The rain upon the heads of Sam and I. The anchor swung in the waves crashing down To fill our boat full of the foaming sea. "Cut 'er loose" ol' Sam yelled, "or we'll both drown!" Cutting the rope, I set Sam and I free. Many's the time I remember that day, And how that action brought us back to shore. When worldly storms threaten to come my way, I let go of t… Continue

The Subtle Rain

There is a subtleness in the soft rain, Binding my thoughts to contemplative things, Where my musings walk, but do not complain About the raindrops dripping on the strings Of my melancholy, solemn soul. They walk on wet trails and the water clings To the trees and the fields, and the grassy knoll Where I stop and absorb a moist knowing That the rain comes down to simply extol Blessings that God is always bestowing On the unwitting heads of you and I. His love is like water, always flowing, C… Continue

Spirit

There dwells in me a tiny light. A spirit that never dies. It cannot perish, come the night, Nor quail beneath stormy skies. It does grow faint, when I go astray From the one who has created it; And I must labor to find a way to rekindle my weakened spirit. Oh how my life seems utterly wrong, When I wander from where it came. Oh how I suffer, and struggle along, With only a spark for a flame. But let this light, this tiny light, Be fanned by God's great hand; Then I am given a brief insight,… Continue

My Sweet Sorrow

Sweet sorrow, my joy is joined with you, Although your darkened shapes shift through my view, And speak to me in such a somber tone Of all the pleasant places I have known. But can I climb the highest mountain top Without the valley floor as my first stop, And how can I rise without a fall? Could I grow strong without first being small? Oh Lord, Your hallowed hand has hollowed me Into a vessel to be filled joyfully, And I shall revel in my sweet sorrow. This weakness strengthens me for tomorro… Continue

The Calling Star

In the slumbering seas of comforting night I beheld the heavens, and to my delight, A lone bright star shone down on me With illuminating beauty. I marveled at this wondrous sight Glowing with celestial light When something stirred inside of me, A feeling fighting to break free. Unprepared to let it out, I quickly turned myself about. I was not ready to explore The one thing I was searching for. Yet there it was, night after night, Calling from an impossible height. Beckoning to my skittish s… Continue
